Work with cempasúchil in dried, powdered, and fresh forms to make natural pigment, then use resist techniques to create tie-dye patterns on bandanas. Facilitated by Jasmín Durán, the session considers waste after Día de Muertos and is part of Art in the Garden and Art and AgriCulture.
From the organizer
Cempohualxochitl / Aztec Marigold Dye Bath
Join us for a free two-hour session on cempohualxochitl, or Aztec marigold, and how its petals yield natural pigment. As Día de Muertos celebrations wind down, we’ll think critically about waste. We’ll ask what can be done with this festivity’s remnants.
You’ll work with cempasúchil in dried, powdered, and fresh forms. Together, we’ll turn it into color medicine for the coming fall and winter. Then you’ll use resist techniques to create tie-dye patterns on bandanas! You’re welcome to bring your own scoured and mordanted pieces too.
